Once a private estate belonging to the Hopewell family, Caledon became a state park in 1974 specifically to protect one of the largest concentrations of bald eagles on the East Coast. The park's old-growth forest and Potomac River frontage create ideal eagle nesting habitat. Guided eagle tours run June–August when eagles congregate to feed on spawning fish.
