Colonial Beach was the epicenter of the century-long 'Potomac River Oyster Wars.' Because the 1632 Maryland charter granted Maryland ownership of the Potomac River all the way to the Virginia shoreline, Virginia watermen and Maryland officials engaged in decades of armed conflict over oyster harvesting rights. Virginia-commissioned 'Oyster Navy' patrol boats faced off against Maryland watermen in running battles. An anchor and cannon on the boardwalk area commemorate this unique chapter in American history.
